Is it an update or a reskin? It looks nice, but will the UI just make so simplistic that you have to click 100 times just to change one small thing. (like apple and android) sacrificing usability for looks?

That’s from a couple years ago. I guess they hired that company to do some, as they say, “Redesigning Defold’s identity, UX & (online presence).” The old Editor 2 thread has the same link. That was a while before Editor 2 was publicly released.
Yes, that is old stuff. Mockups. The current look of Editor 2 is the direction we decided to go in, but the UI will obviously evolve over time when we release new features, but it is unlikely that it will ever look like in the screenshot above.
Next up in terms how big new editor features is to add the ability to toggle visibility of guidelines, game objects and components. (And we’ll also look into the undo functionality that we know many of you do not like).
