.wav VS .ogg

Hello, I got a little confused when reading section in optimizing manual. I would like to know a reason why" .ogg is typically used for music and .wav for sound effects".
My first thought was that it is because .wav files are big, so we better use them only for short files. But then again, why not use .ogg files in both cases to free up extra space?

It’s an old documentation and I’m not entirely certain, but my guess is that since music is longer, you want to compress it to save storage.
But since sound efffects are shorter, it may be more beneficial to have them as uncompressed .wav files.
Theres nothing really stopping you to choose any format for each sound, I think it’s just a common observation.

It depends. Usually the wav file has better quality but it’s uncompressed so it’s big. If you need your sounds in good quality you can use wav. For me I use ogg for both

Thank you! I missed the fact of compression…

I also heard on another post that wav has lower latency then ogg, which I haven’t tried out. This sounds like it’d be relevant to rhythm based games
