Warm Greetings!

Hi All,

I am a Game designer from India. I am pretty new to Defold and Lua and am looking forward to invest into it, i.e. with time, money and energy. My intentions are to prototype with it and learn about the workings of an engine, since now its open source  . From the looks of it, Defold looks pretty neat, but what i wonder is that, why so few people have adopted this gem? It could be cause it recently got open sourced and might gain wide spread adoption.

Also something i wanna ask, before venture onwards into the journey of development with Defold, will there be a dedicated 3D editor editor, workflow and toolsets? I know, that under the hood, Defold is a 3D engine, but nowhere did I find functionalities to support or work with it! I’ve also taken a look at the roadmap, which by far has been accomplished, so great work there, but all it enlists, on the 3D front, is that, ‘better 3D object’ support. What more is on the list, if i may ask? Will it aim to contend with the ‘U’ engines or will it stick to its 2D roots and add more polish/functionalities to it.

Would love to hear it out from you guys.

Hi, and welcome!

While Defold was owened by King it was never a goal to have a huge user base and basically no marketing was made. Now that Defold is owned by the Defold Foundation we’d obviously like to grow the user base a lot but it not only costs a lot of money it also takes a lot of time. The best way to grow the Defold user base is through our existing users. We hope that you all take every opportunity to spread the word of Defold and tell your friends how great it is!

We want to have better 3D tools and it is among the things on our list for 2021, but it is dependant on funding and we have not yet secured the required funding to invest in better 3D tools.

It would be complete suicide to compete head on with Unreal and Unity. It is not something we have planned to do. We will continue to stay relevant as a great cross platform engine with a small and performant core which lends itself really well to web and mobile games, but of course also desktop and console!

I’m sure it’ll happen

That’s mixed news. But I am glad, the team is at it. I’m sure, that with the growing user base, soon, the foundation will find funding too.

Glad to have heard from you @britzl . Looking forward to have a good time here with Defold.
