Tiny Racing - top down racing game

After making Tiny Truck Racing for Made With Defold Jam 2024 I decided to expand my entry into a full product. Although the game only managed fifth place in the jam, it went on to become my most viewed game ever on itch.io also featuring on the front page.

The full game has 3 classes of vehicle each with 9 paint variations, 18 tracks, day and night racing and 3 single player game modes. Race in tournaments to win money to purchase new vehicles and unlock tracks!

I’m planning a 2-4 local multiplayer mode so you can race your friends, though there are some technical hurdles to overcome before achieving that.

The Steam store page is live and there is a small demo there if you want to give it a go. Please wishlist if you like it! It really helps with visibility.

Good luck, wishlisted!

Looking good! Brings back childhood memories of Slicks ‘n’ Slide and Ivan Ironman Stewart’s Super Off Road.

If there’s one feature I would ask for, it’s to make skid marks stay until the end of the race — there’s something satisfying about seeing the change to the track at the end, and the good and bad racing lines you took.

Tiny Racing and Tameshi won’t run on SteamDeck, but I see that Chromacell works fine. Is there some piece of code that can be added to Tiny Racing as well?

I think the recommendation is make a Linux build and upload, instead of dioing the proton(?) emulation thing using the Windows version. Not entirely sure about this. @Alex_8BitSkull probably knows.

Yes, I always do Linux builds and I haven’t had issues with my games running on Steam Deck (except sometimes Steam bugs out and tries to run the Windows build incorrectly). I know @benjames171 said he would try to upload a Linux build for Chromacell, so I wonder if that’s worth giving a shot for Tiny Racing and Tameshi?

It certainly isn’t the case that you need to add any code or anything like that.

Worth noting though that for some reason Chromacell runs with Proton Experimental in the compatibility section (which means that it is running the Windows build). Not sure what that implies.

Very good. I liked the lighting effects, which, by the way, I don’t know how to do in Defold.

In the home stretch now!

Multiplayer is well on the way and most other aspects of the game complete. A couple of bugs remain illusive but hopefully will be resolved in the next few days.

Aiming to submit to Steam at the beginning of May for a scheduled release on June 5th.

DEMO 2 is out now! Features single player formula cars on three brand new tracks, day and night.

Windows build is solid but mixed reports of Linux users. Hopefully can nail that down better before launch.

Aiming to release on Steam June 5th and Nintendo Switch later in the summer.

Best wishes for the success of your game! Is two player game mode not available in demo?

I also wanted to say that it’s very noticeable to the eye that the capsule cover in Steam is drawn by the AI (is that right or did it look that way to me?). I feel like these things should still be drawn by hand, like @Alex_8BitSkull do. Considering Steam players are still negative towards AI content.

And a small technical problem - the game doesn’t take display scale into account and doesn’t stretch the game to full screen. This is on Windows 10 with scale 200% (i.e. logical resolution 1920x1080, real 3840x2160, and display scale multiplier 2):

Single player only in the demo. The full game features 2-4 players locally.

Thanks for reporting this. Have uploaded a fix [V0.21D] which should be live any minute.

Not a fan of AI either. Painting store artwork by hand requires a lot of skill (which I don’t have) and as a micro-developer there is no budget to outsource.
