The scope of top down shooter games

hello there.
I was just sitting idle today, when this question stuck me. I gave it an over thought, and hence decided to know your views.
So, what do you think , do 2d top down shooters, still have a scope for development? I mean that will a 2d top down shooter will be able to compete with modern 3d games in the market, even if it is build alongside some nice 2d cinematics, realistic art and a very serious storyline.?
(Really, it has been a long time since I have played a good tds.)

Gameplay makes or breaks any game. Hotline Miami and Door Kickers are two successful 2D top down shooter games that spring to mind (and they each focus on a particular kind of gameplay). It’s very easy to slap a genre to a game and say “this genre is what defines this game, hence it is similar to all these other games”. If you innovate enough to capture the player’s attention, the base genre doesn’t matter that much anymore. For example, does saying that Stanley’s Parable is a walking simulator say anything about the game? Nope. Is the fact that you’re walking in 3D first-person the key feature of the game? Nope. I’m not a shooter player and I still had a ton of fun with Overwatch, discovering the different hero mechanics. Etc. (End rant)

Top down shooters absolutely still have market potential. Don’t let anyone tell you that any genre isn’t viable it always can be. I remember back in the old indie days of 2004~ lots of people insisted that match-3 games were saturated and could never be viable for market again because of all of the “Bejewled clones” but that was long before Candy Crush or other titans of match-3 existed…

That’s good to hear!! I had always wanted to create a 2d top down shooter, but was always confused whether they would be able to attract people or not. And now that I’m inspired, I can go on with my dream, and maybe create something I had always wanted to. And if Candy Crush could survive those days, then I am sure that top down shooters do still have scope. Thanks @pkeod and @dapetcu21 for guiding me…
