how to fix it?
I figured out the reason, defold does not support 8bit

Audacity (I expect) and any other audio editing program can render a higher bit rate file than you need, that will sound the same.
the sound file will be larger, and it’s bad.
ps/ I use Audacity and dBpoweramp
8 bit wav files are much larger than ogg files, that Defold also supports. For a short sample like the one you linked the difference is not huge but here’s what I got for a 2 minute long chiptune:
- 8 bit wav: 12MB
- ogg (medium quality): 4MB
the file that I posted weighs 5 kb
I tried to compress it into mp3-defold - I did not accept it
I did not manage to compress up to 5kb in different formats, so that defold could take it
Defold supports file in Wave or Ogg Vorbis format. Defold supports sound files saved at 16bit bit depth and with a sampling rate of 44100. (see Sound in Defold)
The file you posted is 4,2KB in 8 bit wav format. It is 4,7KB in medium quality (pretty good) OGG format. Here is the file:

checked, works in defold, but windows does not work, probably I do not have any codec …
