King Tutorials

Hi,

Since King owns and/or uses Defold and has plenty of great games in the store. Is there a tutorial made by King specifically for Defold users that will take a beginner like me to create “King Quality” games from beginning to publishing?

It would certainly help beginners like me get ideas on how King uses Defold to create ultra high-quality games.

cheers,
Rey

No, I’m afraid not. King teams have access to the same engine, documentation, tutorials and other learning materials as you guys.

The Defold tutorials, example and manuals as well as the video recordings should hopefully be enough to get you started with Defold. If there are specific areas of the Defold engine and editor that you feel needs further explanation then please let us know and we’ll look into creating the missing materials.

When it comes to creating games with that certain app store hit quality seen in games from King, Supercell, Rovio, Zynga and others there are many other things to consider, other than creating the actual game logic. A lot of work goes into content creation and balancing of game content. We iterate on levels, art, animations and other types of content while constantly play-testing the game and measuring the player retention. This is really an art-form itself, detached from the choice of game engine. I’m sure there are many articles and videos out there outlining this part of the game development process.

@britzl Is Defold used at King for “only prototyping” or “production” or “both”? I have read in an article that King uses Fiction Factory for production of major games.

King has released three games so far using Defold:

  • Keyword - First Defold game released by King as a proof of concept. It is no longer available in the app stores
  • Blossom Blast Saga - First proper saga game made using Defold
  • Pet Rescue Puzzle Saga - The sequel to Pet Rescue Saga. Currently in a staged roll-out and live in a couple of markets

We’ve also canned a bunch of Defold games in various stages of development (not due to the choice of engine mind you!). The one that actually reached a public play-test was “Stellar: Galaxy Commander”.

And we have games in production using Defold, but for obvious reasons I’m not allowed to talk about them.

Would it be too much to ask for info on what engine does Legend of Solgard use?

LoS is made by Snowprint Studio, King is publishing the game. It is not made with Defold.

Probably made with Unity.

At Snowprint, our games are built using Unity and C#.
