Introduce yourself

Hi there. Spilocke here. Been ping ponging here and there on games dev engine and I guess its about time to start my Defold journey here. Been with Flash, then with Multimedia Fusion (had a great time publishing flash games while it lasted), then when flash was no longer a mainstream, moved on to Android, didn’t amount to anything much with Multimedia Studio Android and just couldn’t get pass making anything other than those tutorials in Unity and Godot.

Then I found Defold. What I love about this is the way it handles Android compilation. No more massive downloads and version upgrade to my local Android SDK. Everything is done via Defold. Thank you guys very much as this means the world to me.

Hello! I’m Matt, some friends call me Hackett. I’ve been an obsessed game developer for many years, mostly JavaScript, and mostly solo. I wrote a book called How to Make a Video Game All By Yourself and am working on a handwritten JavaScript ECS game called Pixel Washer.

Heard about Defold ages ago and finally found some time to kick the tires. It’s great! The editor is lovely, Lua is a fantastic language choice, the docs and examples are plentiful, and I’m most impressed by the remarkable build targets. Defold seems to do just about everything, while remaining tight and focused. Amazing!

Been reading up on the forum and just wanted to say hi. Great to meet you

Hello, everyone!

I am new to Defold (as I am to any other game engine), so I am here to introduce myself by saying that I am not a programmer, but I have definitely decided to learn programming and its concepts using Defold. I chose Defold because I fell in love with it the very first time I used it, I am also learning pixel art.
I am full of hope that I can grow with the community to learn and develop my first game, aware that it will be a long journey, but I won’t give up (am I being too emotional?)

Hi,

my name is Kai.

I am a hobby game dev, and currently switching from Godot to other engines.

I had a blast yesterday with Defold, as it feels super clean and streamlined.

I’m planning to get a game done and published with it in the next months, and have it featurewise on par with my previous game(s).

Keep up the good work. :slightly_smiling_face:

Kind regards.

Hello everyone,

I’m a college student looking to make a video game with his friends and thought Defold would be a great choice based off the lightweight engine, documentation, and commmunity. I look forward to working with this engine and asking everyone many, many questions! Also, I play Rocket League a lot.

Hello everyone!

My name is Rodrigo and I am a solo hobby game dev. As a Linux user, I prefer open source programs and finding out about Defold was a great surprise. Although I started my studies at Defold in January 2024, I decided to introduce myself only at the end of 2024, as I spent the year testing Defold and would like to give a more coherent testimonial as possible, given my past experiences with other game engines and frameworks.

I have always liked video games since I was a child and the possibility of creating games has always fascinated me. Over the years, I have noticed the growth of the indie game creation community and the emergence of several game engines, which make it easier for anyone to produce them. Even though I didn’t know anything about programming, I decided to venture into learning game development in 2018 using Godot. I came across some problems, mainly the game I was developing breaking after some version updates, such as animations and changes in the GDScript language. I then decided to seek an approach that was less focused on the game engine interface and more focused on programming code. So, I started experimenting with Löve 2D (my first contact with LUA) and then I learned Python, using the Pygame library. And since I use Blender in my main job, I tested a little of Upbge.

In early 2024, I decided to test Defold and was surprised by its objective, clear, but also powerful interface, combined with the LUA code that makes the work very productive.

I know that I still have a long way to go before publishing my first game. Developing a game is a challenging task, as it involves creating a strong concept, storytelling, art, audio, effects, logic, polishing, advertising, promotion and much more. Since I only have a few hours a week to dedicate and since I do everything alone, the task is big. But looking at it from another perspective, the learning is very rewarding.

I believe that video games are an important form of cultural expression and, above all, of entertainment. And nowadays, more than ever, anyone with initiative, willpower and a desire for knowledge can create their own game. And a game engine (or whatever interface you use to create your game) cannot and should not create obstacles and hinder your work, effort and time. It has to function as a blank canvas where you can apply your creativity and ideas.
And that is what I realized at Defold. Their development team gave me lightweight and solid software, updates that do not interfere with my code, quality tutorials and a very engaged community.

With each passing day I feel more confident that I can get there and finally publish my first game, after so much testing and experimentation. I hope I can always count on the support of the Defold team and this incredible community on this journey.

Thank you all! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a 2025 full of achievements.

Hi there,

My name is Thomas, I’m from Germany. My programming skills go back to the mid-80s, when I developed my first game. Back then it was on the Amstrad CPC664. At the beginning of the 90s I ported it to the PC and earned some money with it. I still have a few fans of this now 30-year-old game today.

I remained loyal to programming, but ended up in a different industry.
Since Corona, I’ve been back to games a bit, released a new version of my old game for Android with OpenFL/Haxe and recently developed a small causal game for Android as a test with Defold.

At the moment I’m thinking about getting back into the games industry and putting together a small team/startup.
I am therefore currently looking for some contact with German or Austrian Defold developers.

Cheers
Thomas

Hi! My name is Louie. I am a A-Level computer science student and I’m interested in game development. I’ve been using Defold as it is one of the few game engines allowed by my exam board and I’m looking to make a platformer demo. I’m here to learn more about the engine and game development/programming in general

Hi everyone! I’m Simon.

I’m not completely new to game dev, but I am new to Defold.

I chose to make games using Defold due to my experience with other Lua based game engines in the very distant past (I used to use Gideros more than 10 years ago!!). I’ve also used other game engines and frameworks.

I have made a fair number of educational apps and games for the mobile marketplace, but now I’d like to get into writing small games and apps specifically for the web.

I’m looking forward to building great web based games with this engine. My hope is to also get to know, and perhaps collaborate on small projects.

Hope to see you in the forum!

Kind regards,

Simon W.

I also used Gideros before coming to Defold. They’re very different engines. Defold feels more like Flash to me, but minus the bugs in Flash.

Welcome!

Hi @totebo

Many thank for your reply. I think I recall your username! Did you use the same name on the Gideros forum?

I used to love using Gideros to make mobile learning games. I’m currently doing the Defold course on Zenva.

Cheers!

Simon W.
