Introduce yourself

Hi, I’m Floor!

I started using Defold in January for my “Senior” Computer Science project (I was a Junior in a Senior class). I loved it more than other game development software’s I’ve used so far! I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent in documentation and forum posts, but that’s because they are so comprehensive and genuinely helpful.
I have a couple games I’m working on and I’m looking forward to putting them together in Defold! I’ve been lurking all over this forum but now I’ll do my best to share the help to others.

Hi, I’m Lucien!

I haven’t got a whole bunch of experience with game development, however I am keen to learn it. I’m currently studying 2D animation at university and have also done some concept art for games in the past and have joined a couple of game jams as an artist. I only discovered Defold today, however I mostly wanted to learn to use Defold in particular as I am slightly familiar with Lua from when I used to attempt to make games on roblox when I was younger.

So far Defold seems a lot easier for me to understand and pickup than other engines I have tried to use in the past. So I have my fingers crossed for this one.

Hey, I’m Lucas!

I’ve been working as a web developer for the past few years and actually started programming due my interest in gamedev (older event-based RPG Makers, RGSS and later ActionScript…). Released two minor games on Steam, and am working on the third one while already decided to change my main tool after releasing, and so far Defold ticks all boxes in what I look for.

I’ve been aware of Defold for quite some time (in fact this account is a few years old already) but now I’m more willing to put effort into moving to a new ecossystem and hopefully retribute what I’ve got from communities this whole time with some contributions myself.

Hello there. My name’s Keenan. I have no prior coding experience and am the least tech savvy person I know by a rather wide margin. I joined the forum because I’ve just been trying to brute force my way through learning everything from scratch, which has yielded surprising (if limited) results all on its own, but it occurred to me that there are probably plenty of other people who don’t know what they’re doing either. And where better to ask for help learning a game engine than the place where all the people using the game engine congregate?

Hi everyone. My name is Kaique, I graduated in Computer Science 2022, with about 2-3 toy games made from assignments. But In the last couple of years I’ve really started to enjoy it more, and after trying Unity, Godot and Pico8 (it helped me realize I needed more lua :brazil: in my life). I started searching for a serious engine, that exported to web(love2d falls short). And I don’t ever feel like changing from Defold now, the ecosystem is so extendable. And I feel like creating tons of tools to reuse and build on top of each other.
I work fullstack webdev, but I feel like gravitating towards building games and coding fun simulations, so I try and make videos and fund this dream, that most gamedevs have.

I’m making an online multiplayer MOBA(think dota2, league) like game.
I use Defold for the client, Colyseus for the authoritative server, and TypescriptToLua as a shared library between the two, so I can try and apply client-side-prediction.
I payed the steam fee, did the signups, and hope to have a page for the game up soon
Also I really enjoy the community here.
I hope to cross path with you all in other posts in the forum.

@selimanac introduction will be found in the amazing repositories that are on github for Defold. There are few devs that you should absolutely follow on github. @astrochili @d954mas @dlannan @jhonny.goransson @ross.grams are to name a few.

Would add: @britzl@benjames (so many awesome pixel art games) … we really should sort an awesome defold list honestly. Github is a treasure trove of great defold examples and applications.

Hello fellow game developers! My name is Christian (known as waldorfhammer on itch) and I’ve been an amateur game developer since the C64 days. Over the years, I’ve made countless little games using various game engines and programming languages, including Unity (JavaScript & C#), Visual Studio (C++), Defold (Lua), Mini Micro (MiniScript), TyranoBuilder (TyranoScript), Multimedia Fusion 2 and, of course, good old BASIC.

I’ve had games published on the Windows Phone Marketplace (2011), Kongregate (2012-2015) and Itch (2017-2024). Looking forward to submitting my latest to Steam shortly.

I just created a game for the [Made With Defold Jam 2024], and I’m excited to continue using Defold and Lua to create more ‘masterpieces’. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thank you for developing such a robust, user-friendly engine and for using Lua, a language that has been very easy for me to learn.

Hello everyone,

my name is Daniel and I have been working in the IT industry for 30 years (programmer, team leader, project manager, …).

I have always been interested in game development.
Years ago I developed two mobile games in Gamemaker Studio.

Since about 2 years I have a new game idea in mind which I would like to realize. Since then I have been looking for a suitable game engine and time.

Defold looks really good to me. I especially like the performance, the LUA scripting and the messaging system.
What I’m still missing is a simple - built-in - light system.

Hi there. Spilocke here. Been ping ponging here and there on games dev engine and I guess its about time to start my Defold journey here. Been with Flash, then with Multimedia Fusion (had a great time publishing flash games while it lasted), then when flash was no longer a mainstream, moved on to Android, didn’t amount to anything much with Multimedia Studio Android and just couldn’t get pass making anything other than those tutorials in Unity and Godot.

Then I found Defold. What I love about this is the way it handles Android compilation. No more massive downloads and version upgrade to my local Android SDK. Everything is done via Defold. Thank you guys very much as this means the world to me.

Hello! I’m Matt, some friends call me Hackett. I’ve been an obsessed game developer for many years, mostly JavaScript, and mostly solo. I wrote a book called How to Make a Video Game All By Yourself and am working on a handwritten JavaScript ECS game called Pixel Washer.

Heard about Defold ages ago and finally found some time to kick the tires. It’s great! The editor is lovely, Lua is a fantastic language choice, the docs and examples are plentiful, and I’m most impressed by the remarkable build targets. Defold seems to do just about everything, while remaining tight and focused. Amazing!

Been reading up on the forum and just wanted to say hi. Great to meet you

Hello, everyone!

I am new to Defold (as I am to any other game engine), so I am here to introduce myself by saying that I am not a programmer, but I have definitely decided to learn programming and its concepts using Defold. I chose Defold because I fell in love with it the very first time I used it, I am also learning pixel art.
I am full of hope that I can grow with the community to learn and develop my first game, aware that it will be a long journey, but I won’t give up (am I being too emotional?)

Hi,

my name is Kai.

I am a hobby game dev, and currently switching from Godot to other engines.

I had a blast yesterday with Defold, as it feels super clean and streamlined.

I’m planning to get a game done and published with it in the next months, and have it featurewise on par with my previous game(s).

Keep up the good work. :slightly_smiling_face:

Kind regards.

Hello everyone,

I’m a college student looking to make a video game with his friends and thought Defold would be a great choice based off the lightweight engine, documentation, and commmunity. I look forward to working with this engine and asking everyone many, many questions! Also, I play Rocket League a lot.

Hello everyone!

My name is Rodrigo and I am a solo hobby game dev. As a Linux user, I prefer open source programs and finding out about Defold was a great surprise. Although I started my studies at Defold in January 2024, I decided to introduce myself only at the end of 2024, as I spent the year testing Defold and would like to give a more coherent testimonial as possible, given my past experiences with other game engines and frameworks.

I have always liked video games since I was a child and the possibility of creating games has always fascinated me. Over the years, I have noticed the growth of the indie game creation community and the emergence of several game engines, which make it easier for anyone to produce them. Even though I didn’t know anything about programming, I decided to venture into learning game development in 2018 using Godot. I came across some problems, mainly the game I was developing breaking after some version updates, such as animations and changes in the GDScript language. I then decided to seek an approach that was less focused on the game engine interface and more focused on programming code. So, I started experimenting with Löve 2D (my first contact with LUA) and then I learned Python, using the Pygame library. And since I use Blender in my main job, I tested a little of Upbge.

In early 2024, I decided to test Defold and was surprised by its objective, clear, but also powerful interface, combined with the LUA code that makes the work very productive.

I know that I still have a long way to go before publishing my first game. Developing a game is a challenging task, as it involves creating a strong concept, storytelling, art, audio, effects, logic, polishing, advertising, promotion and much more. Since I only have a few hours a week to dedicate and since I do everything alone, the task is big. But looking at it from another perspective, the learning is very rewarding.

I believe that video games are an important form of cultural expression and, above all, of entertainment. And nowadays, more than ever, anyone with initiative, willpower and a desire for knowledge can create their own game. And a game engine (or whatever interface you use to create your game) cannot and should not create obstacles and hinder your work, effort and time. It has to function as a blank canvas where you can apply your creativity and ideas.
And that is what I realized at Defold. Their development team gave me lightweight and solid software, updates that do not interfere with my code, quality tutorials and a very engaged community.

With each passing day I feel more confident that I can get there and finally publish my first game, after so much testing and experimentation. I hope I can always count on the support of the Defold team and this incredible community on this journey.

Thank you all! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a 2025 full of achievements.

Rodrigo
