I’m currently using a Windows PC that has 8GB of ram, but the problem is that I’m doing both my work, games and game dev on it which gets a bit messy. I’ve just got a job working from home using my own computer, so I’m probably just going to clean it up and use that one.
I’ve been interested in iOS games but after doing some research and found no way around needing a Mac computer. I know I could use a virtual machine but I feel morally obliged to get a Mac.
The problem is that Macs are so damn expensive. I’ve been looking around and it costs $2,000 for a brand new Mac with 8GB of ram. I was wondering that since Defold isn’t all that cpu intensive and I’m only going to be making 2D games if I could get away with only having 4GB of ram.
And if it doesn’t work out then I could just use the Mac as my work computer anyway so it wouldn’t be much of a loss.
Good question. For Defold I think 4GB is enough, but surely the bulk of the cost doesn’t lie with the amount of RAM? Are you looking at a Macbook Pro or an Air? I would recommend a Pro, but I guess and Air is enough for Defold as well. In my personal experience an SSD disk is a must and they get a bit pricey when they are large, but it’s worth it (then again maybe all Macs these days use SSD drives?).
I was looking at buying a Macbook Pro, but if I don’t have the money then I’d have to settle for an Air. You should add functionality for being able to sign iOS apps on Windows, I believe Marmalade and Cocos2d-x can do that so it is possible.
