Defold not starting on Windows 11

Can’t manipulate the Defold folder after open the .exe

No process and I can’t delete the Defold folder (only if I restart).

I tried to reproduce, but I can’t. The .exe simply does nothing.

Anything in the logs?

Here we go. The editor fails to unpack files. @vlaaad ideas?

The exception in the log is a bit unrelated to the other issue in the startup process. The exception happens because there is no necessary Java system property for the app to think that it’s not in dev mode, and it tries to analyze the source code. @NewDefoldUser, could it be that at one point you tried to launch the jar instead of the exe? It would explain the exception. Unfortunately, it does not help with the actual issue that the app does not start. There are many harmless warnings about unsupported JavaFX configuration that appear on start, and then nothing, not even resource unpacking… Could it be that you put Defold into the Program Files dir, maybe?

@vlaaad Yes, I tried .jar after many tries with .exe.

About the path, I tried E:\Defold, C:\Defold, C:\Users\Defold, C:\Users\user\Defold, and C:\Users\user\Documents\Defold. Also tried AppData\Local and AppData\Roaming.

Could it be that you put Defold into the Program Files dir, maybe? I didn’t try.

Todays log from E:\Defold using .exe:

2025-06-30 19:11:10.175 258 [JavaFX-Launcher] WARN javafx - Unsupported JavaFX configuration: classes were loaded from ‘unnamed module @442f5108

Is there anything I can do to help find the source of the problem?

Start by deleting the folder where you unpacked the Defold archive (ie with the Defold.exe etc) and also delete any C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\defold-unpackxyz folder. Then unpack the Defold zip again into for instance your user’s Documents or Desktop folder.

I did what was asked and I unpacked inside the Desktop.

And that is the only entry in the entire log?

Yes

Perhaps you can check with ProcMon if there are any files that won’t load/open properly during startup.

It’s hard for us to guess, so we need more info/ideas with your help.

Do I need to search just for dmengine?

No, dmengine is the Defold engine runtime. You should look for Defold.exe (which is the editor that you are trying to start). Possibly also for Java.exe or similar.

For me editor is named in task as;
win10_java_defold_editor

That’s not a zip file, that’s a rar file.
Please upload a .zip format instead.
