Hello,
Do you plan to add Apple TV support? It’s really close to iOS but has some differences too.
Thanks.
Hello,
Do you plan to add Apple TV support? It’s really close to iOS but has some differences too.
Thanks.
It seems like quite a few of the iOS APIs exist for Apple TV as well, but there are also a few fundamental differences. One such difference is the lack of persistent on device storage. Instead data is persisted in iCloud.
My guess is that if enough people ask for Apple TV support and the market share is big enough then we’ll get support for it.
Have you progress in Apple TV support feature?
As you know Apple TV support can help Get App Featured from Apple - it’s very important thing.
We have Apple TV support in a dev branch, but I’m not sure if anyones done any more work on it. Thank you for getting back to us and raising the question again. @Sara/@saracederberg (which one is it?) can you bring this request to the next planning meeting?
We have reviewed the semi-completed implementation of Apple TV support and it is not ready for release yet. We might be able to do something about it after 1.2.95 during the Christmas period lull before we pick up pace beginning of January again.
Have you do any progress in Apple TV support feature?
No, no progress. The team is currently prioritising other things such as:
Adding new platforms will most likely not happen this year (excluding Facebook GameRoom).
@britzl In meantime, our team is porting one game from Unity to Defold for performance reasons. Its glad to hear that you did not cross this platform ![]()
I’m also interested in Apple TV support. While I learn your platform, I hope you can get it out (maybe early next year?)
In general, we need a concrete case to prioritize a new platform. A lot of the things on our roadmap contains things that we believe is necessary for Defold in the long run (like native extensions and the new editor) and there are many things like that and we cannot put 100% of our resources into those things. Our game developers (internally and externally) are vital to us and we get constant requests for fixes and new features.
In general we ask for a good plan from the developer to be able to assess how important a big new feature is for their game and also when the developer needs the feature.
For instance, if you make a game targeting Apple TV you can probably do almost all of the development on desktop machines, but you should let us know what you’re up to and talk to us during the course of development so we can figure out how best to assist.
Hi guys.
Wow, this issue is from 2017, what was built in this 9 years?
Any news?
A lot, just not Apple TV support: Release notes - Defold game engine forum
No. But let me ask you this:
If we announced Apple TV support tomorrow, what would you do? Do you already have a game waiting for release?
The reason I’m asking is that the maintenance cost of a new platform is huge for us. We really do not want to invest time and money to develop and maintain a platform if no one is going to use it.
It’s not a difficult thing; I even added Apple TV support to Axmol in 2022:
The problem people have is thinking it’s all about launching and making money, but actually I use it more because it’s the closest thing to a console for testing your game. With support for Apple and Microsoft joysticks. It’s perfect for testing everything on a single device. You have a 4K screen, you have joysticks, you have unconventional TV controls, you have limited resources which helps you optimize, in short, I could list several advantages.
I have a game there and it makes testing much easier, in addition to many different ways to play in a group on the same TV. See:
But anyway, I’ve already understood that people will only provide support when someone puts money into it, which is to say, never.
Oh, cool! We do accept pull requests you know! ![]()
I think this is totally unfair. The core Defold team is funded mainly through corporate partnerships and support contracts. Some of the funded work we do is focused on certain specific key areas, for instance with Poki their funding should primarily go towards web. Moon Active are more open with how we decide to use the funding, but they are invited to weigh in on the roadmap and directly request new features or fixes. Other funding comes with “no strings attached” and we can invest it where we believe it gives the most bang for the buck. We are for instance investing Defold Foundation funds into console support . No one is directly paying for it, but we do it because it has provided invaluable publicity to Defold, and the fact that console support is free is one of the things which brings users to Defold.
From what we’ve seen so far there’s been very little interest in Apple TV support. Which is why it makes no business sense for us to spend our time and money into building the support for it.
