2d pixel art rpg, how far can I go with defold?

Hey, this may come off as a bit of a dumb and brash question, but I was wondering if defold has the tools to create a rpg akin in scale to say crosscode or a stardew valley.

Although I just booted up the engine a couple of hours ago, I’m severely impressed by the documentation, examples etc. compared to godot, and I’m really surprised there hasn’t been a big rpg release, or atleast something that’s currently in production (please point me if there is).

I’m just wondering, is this because of a limitation with the engine itself or just that enough people haven’t used it yet? I’m leaning towards the latter, because honestly, I’d love to go full scale with my project in defold, there’s something about the style of the engine that seems very cool lol.

I’m coming from a custom engine in C++, but due to time constraints, I don’t think that I can follow through with creating my own engine and game, too much work for what I want to acheive. Defold looks like a really optimal solution, but I’d rather avoid working here if this environment is somehow unable to handle a larger scale game, which seems rather unlikely tbh. Do you guys think I should follow through with defold? or should I rather go towards other solutions like godot or unity?

Okay, quick update. I’ve looked through the forums, and I’ve found an answer to every question I had. Looks like I’m hopping on board :raised_hands:.

Fates of Ort is a good example of an RPG made with Defold:

Plague Lords is another one:

I believe Defold is pretty capable of doing anything on every scale like almost any other engines. But there are challenges of course which you will be facing on every other engine(turns your hair white). It is simply impossible for us to suggest an engine without knowing every details of your project. If you like Defold, go for it, do your own tests according to your need. This is the only way of judging it.

One of the reason why I love Defold most. If you know C/C++, there is an C/C++ API and it is quite easy to use/build and extend your game capabilities. I can say Defold’s native extension system is way better then Godot and Unity. Build system is great because you don’t need to care about cross platform building. Online (and of course you can setup a offline version) build server is where it shines.
