Good question!

I tried searching for the ROG Ally in the SDL database but couldn’t find it:

It’s a bit concerning if it doesn’t cover some of the controllers we have in our gamepad mappings…

From the documentation:

Create New Mappings

A mapping looks like this:

030000004c050000c405000000010000,PS4 Controller,a:b1,b:b2,back:b8,dpdown:h0.4,dpleft:h0.8,dpright:h0.2,dpup:h0.1,guide:b12,leftshoulder:b4,leftstick:b10,lefttrigger:a3,leftx:a0,lefty:a1,rightshoulder:b5,rightstick:b11,righttrigger:a4,rightx:a2,righty:a5,start:b9,x:b0,y:b3,platform:Mac OS X,

It includes controller GUID (030000004c050000c405000000010000), a name (PS4 Controller), button / axis mappings (leftshoulder:b4) and a platform (platform:Mac OS X).

Please make sure to check that the name is a good description of the controller. If relevant, include the controller’s name and model number.

My theory is:

  • It’s the GUID (e.g. 030000004c050000c405000000010000) that matters for mapping in the SDL database;
  • The name (e.g. PS4 Controller) is generated by whatever mapping tool is used and is there for human readability;
  • Some (many? most?) submitters don’t bother updating the name to something more sensible; and
  • The ROG Ally in SDL is named “Xbox Controller” by the SDL mapping utility (same as gdc), and the submitter didn’t bother changing it.

That’s just a guess though, we’d need to verify it. I would be surprised if our coverage was better than theirs - I see over 800 entries for Windows alone in SDL, whereas our total is about 200 (6 for windows?!).

You’re right. This is indeed what matters!

If make mapping through the app SDL2 Gamepad Tool by General Arcade | General Arcade or Releases · Ryochan7 / SDL2 Gamepad Mapper · GitLab (download .7z - it’s a pre-built version for Windows), it will tell us right away whether it is in the SDL database and what the device guid is.

@Piro just out of curiosity would you mind checking using this tool to see what the GUID for your gamepad is? Thank you! :grin:

The voice acting is epic, and I really love the comic book style. So someday you’ll hopefully spill the tea on all the little secrets of how to make such a great trailer and game. :crossed_fingers:
