Morgerion has shared Defold MPEG - a native extension for playing MPEG-1 and AV1 videos directly on GUI nodes, with synchronized audio!

Originally based on the official Defold MPEG video player extension, it introduces several improvements and new features:

  • MPEG-1 and AV1 support - choose between lightweight decoding and more efficient video compression.

  • Synchronized audio - playback through regular Defold sound components.

  • Hardware-friendly rendering - YUV to RGB conversion handled by a shader instead of the CPU.

  • Asynchronous AV1 decoding - background decoding and frame buffering to minimize gameplay interruptions.

  • Simple Lua API - the mpeg.gui_video module makes it easy to display videos on GUI nodes.

  • Playback controls - looping, seeking, playback speed adjustment, and more.

The extension supports builds for Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, and HTML5, although runtime testing has so far focused on Windows.

The repository also includes an example project, installation instructions, FFmpeg conversion commands, and performance benchmarks.
