We were delighted to sit down with Shiho Kaneko from Fingersoft to talk about bringing Hill Climb Racing Lite to Poki with Defold!
From what it takes to adapt a beloved physics-based classic for fast, lightweight browser play, to why the team chose Defold - this is a great look behind the scenes of taking a mobile hit to the web. If you’re curious about web platform adaptation, and rebuilding for instant play, you’ll want to check this one out!
It’s great to see that successful old-school teams are starting to use Defold - that’s really nice to see!
It’s just a bit disappointing that the team seems to have forgotten to include an “authors” section in the game (or maybe I just couldn’t find it), so there’s no mention of either the developers themselves or the Defold engine.
They also disabled the small Defold banner in the browser console (which is enabled by default). That’s a pity.
Yeah, that’s a pity and so is the case with many other games made with Defold. We don’t require any game to include Defold banners, and HTML template can be modified freely, so it’s totally fine (yet, of course, we would love every game made with Defold to show it!).
But in case of HCRL there are Credits in the Settings and so are all the tools mentioned!
We had a great time communicating with them and we really appreciate they wanted to share their insights, feedback and experience in the interview. We also received the graphics to put on the showcase:
It is usually hidden away somewhere (if it is included at all). We are happy that Fingersoft agreed to let us promote the Defold version of the game and we are really proud that they chose Defold for the job!
I can hint that there is at least one other well known IP on Poki where Defold is used but where the IP owner did not give permission to promote the use of Defold together with their brand. It’s unfortunate because promotions like in the case with Hill Climb Racing Lite is great publicity for Defold.
