I am just trying to get through the first tutorial. I can get to step 4 and then it falls apart. I can set the Image property to the atlas but the Default Animation has issues. I figured to type ground02 in to the box but then I get some red text in a box stating “The animation ‘ground02’ could not be found in the specified tile set”. I was going to try to use this software for a high school game software class I teach but if the first tutorial has issues then I will have to bail on it. There have already been a couple of unexplained steps previously that I had to figure out by trial and error. This is not good for a first tutorial.
Hang in there. It has some trial and error required still, but the software is really good. This is coming from someone unaffiliated with Defold who has worked on game development for many years.
I’m not sure of the specifics of where it went wrong for you, but you could try to follow along with the videos for this tutorial instead
Hi. It’s really hard to find a good level of detail in a tutorial. Some people prefer every single mouse clicked documented while others find that tedious and long-winded. The tutorials are still being worked on and we appreciate all the feedback we can get from you guys!
So, you’re stuck on step #4, “Creating a hero character”? When you set the atlas for a Sprite component the Default Animation drop down also needs to be changed from it’s default value. The same goes for when you set the spine scene to use for a Spine component. You should be able to see all animations available in the drop down. Which values do you see?
The first tutorial should be idiot proof and show every key press. I have the default animation issue fixed. I tried it on my school computer and the ground01 and ground02 appear in the animation drop down where they did not on my home computer. I will have to double check but off hand I do not see the differences. If there are issues between computers then that is bad.
As a teacher I am a pretty harsh evaluator of tutorials. I simply do not have the time to tinker a lot. I am often only a day or two ahead of the kids when teaching new software so a glitch in the tutorial is a big problem. At the moment there are a lot of difference between the tutorial and what I am seeing on the screen. This is real bad for beginners. The simple detail when adding a game object to a collection and the game object is named “go” which does not match the graphic in the tutorial is enough to throw a beginner off. Yes it is trivial to go change the name of the object in the “Id” field but when the tutorial does not explain this little step it can confuse the beginner.
As a teacher I am basically presenting tutorials every day to kids. There are no “obvious” steps. I would love to get an editable copy of this tutorial. I would fix it and return it.
I will check out the suggested video. I will continue trying this software for a while longer hoping I can learn it enough to get the kids started on it… Thanks for the help.
We’ve had absolute beginners (but certainly not kids) go through the tutorial to get it as concise as possible but there are likely things that can be better. I’d love to get a list of specific things that you spotted if possible. (You could print it to PDF, for example and add annotations.)
Edit: I just noticed that there are some typographic issues. I’ll fix those.
Btw, what age are the kids you’re working with?
