Other than using templates, what’s the best way to do this?
I am using a node with a small transparent texture currently.
I usually use box nodes of zero width and height and with a texture set from the same atlas to not break any batches.

How do you set up the zero width / zero height?
Change size mode on the node to Manual and then manually set width and height of the box node to 0.
